shades of blue

Been doing a bunch of these
smaller (11x14-ish) head studies
lately while still working on a
couple of larger things that aren't
quite finished.  I like the looseness
of this one.  A little less line heavy.

sometimes...

I've been struggling with a painting for the
better part of a week now.  I mean fighting
with it for hours almost every day and
it seems the more I work on it the less I like
it.  Then out of frustration I decide to work
on something else briefly and this happens.
This I really like.
Why can't it always happen like that?
Because then art would be easy and
painless.  And stale.

Haven't gotten in the studio much
recently.  Here's a couple of acrylic on
paper pieces.  Both will be full
fledged color paintings someday...

a wee jester

A small one.  14x17 inches.  The smaller
ones are fun.  Challenging in their own
ways but quicker (mostly), I think though,
I'm ready to start doing some big pieces
again...

St. Sebastian

I've been fascinated with the artistic legacy
of St Sebastian forever.  There is such a rich
history of depiction.  Recently I began to
revisit my old favorite with some drawings
and maybe a painting is in the works as well...

the struggle...

Well, I've been fighting with this one for
weeks, somehow never quite finding the
resolution I was looking for.  Finally we
turned the corner though and I'm pleased
to say that now that it's done, the struggle
was worth it. If only I always felt that
way....

Still doing alot of drawing, not as much painting.
Enjoying working with colored pencils on toned
paper with white highlights.  Pretty challenging
in that it is so different from my painting
technique...

We interrupt this blog...

In lieu of Hurricane Isaac and the craziness
which ensues both before and after, I
haven't done much in the studio over the
last week (translation; diddly squat).
So here's some older stuff...

Not old actually, fairly recent.  Experimenting
with a different approach

This one's recent too (okay, so none of this is older stuff!),
and unfinished.  This one started getting too
tight so I had to take a break from it.
Hopefully I can come back to it with a
little fresh energy soon...

Blue girl #12

This was more or less an exercise of using a
somewhat limited palette and just mixing
the colors on the fly with the brushes rather than
pre-mixing.  I like her.

Head study

Just moving paint around, doing a head study.
Interested in leaving areas a little rougher
and not finishing every inch of the canvas
or paper...

Draw Everyday.

Draw Everyday.
That's my new mantra.  Try to get in at
least an hour or two of drawing
everyday, be it just sketching or
more finished stuff.  Drawing skills are so
fundamental to creating better paintings, and
it's amazing how much better I feel
about my work when I am keeping in
practice with pencil and paper.
Lately I've been in full on drawing mode
which is nice.  Here's a few of the more finished
ones.

jester study

Another monochrome study.  I like these
as they are, but this one is definitely going
to become a full blown painting one day.

Ghost

16x20  acrylic on canvas
I don't really enjoy the process of
painting on canvas, the texture and bounce
fight against me.  That said, I do
often like the way the end product
turns out.  Case in point.

Jest wait... (Oy.)

Ok, I have to start putting some stuff up in here.
What's the point of having a blog for my
artwork if I never put any artwork up for peoples to
look at?  Exactly.  This one I dug alot.  It sold the day
I brought it down to the gallery.  Awesome, and a
little sad at the same time.
